Objects built for the permanent.
Hollow Reed Bindery is a small workshop in Red Hook dedicated to the tactile weight of a physical book. We build journals, restore heirlooms, and bind wedding guest books by hand, one stitch at a time.

What We Make
Three ways a book can serve a life.

Custom Hand-Bound Journals
A vessel for a lifetime of writing.
We build journals using heavy linen paper and Smyth-sewn signatures. These are not disposable notebooks; they are structural objects designed to withstand daily use for decades. Available in leather or traditional book cloth.

Restored Heirlooms
Stability for what remains.
We stabilize and repair family Bibles, worn histories, and broken spines. Our approach is conservative, prioritizing the integrity of the original materials while ensuring the book can be handled and read safely once more.

Wedding Guest Books
A singular record of the day.
A custom guest book should feel like the heirloom it will become. We work with couples to select materials, including leather, silk, or linen, that reflect the permanence of the occasion.

The Process
How a Book Is Made
The Inquiry
Send an email with a brief description of your project. For restorations, include a few clear photos of the spine and binding.
The Consultation
We discuss materials, structure, and timeline. You will receive a plain estimate based on the complexity of the work and the cost of the leather or cloth selected.
The Binding
Work begins at the bench. Once the final stitch is pulled taut, your book is ready for pickup at the studio or shipment to your door.
